General Description
N-Acetylneuraminic Acid (Neu5Ac) is one of the main forms of sialic acid (a naturally occurring nine-carbon monosaccharide), which is widely found in glycoproteins and glycolipids on animal cell membranes, especially in nervous tissues, saliva and breast milk. It plays an important role in cell recognition, immune regulation and nerve signal transmission, and is also one of the key mediators for pathogens to infect host cells.
Chemical structure and properties
AcetylNeuraminic Acid is formed by combining neuraminic acid with acetyl, and its chemical formula is CHNO. Its molecular structure contains a hydrophilic carboxylic acid group and hydrophobic acetyl group, which makes it amphiphilic, can be embedded in the surface of cell membrane and participate in transmembrane signal transmission.
