Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH)

The definition of postpartum hemorrhage refers to the maternal vaginal delivery bleeding volume ≥500mL within 24 hours after the delivery of the fetus. The bleeding volume during cesarean section can be ≥1000mL. It is a serious complication during the delivery period and threatens the physical and mental health of the mother. In severe cases, it may even lead to maternal death.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide, and pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries are at the highest risk of PPH complications and are most likely to benefit from preventive measures.

There are many causes of postpartum hemorrhage, among which uterine atony and placental factors are more common, and uterine atony accounts for 70% of them and is the main cause of postpartum hemorrhage. Most postpartum hemorrhage often occurs within 2 hours after delivery, so giving mothers timely medication to promote uterine contraction after delivery can prevent mothers from experiencing massive bleeding symptoms after delivery.

Active management of the third stage of labor is the key to preventing PPH, and the use of preventive uterotonic agents can reduce the incidence of PPH. Oxytocin is the drug of choice for primary prevention of PPH after cesarean section and vaginal delivery.
